Tree Climber 1 — Apprentice

Job Description

This is an entry level apprentice tree climber position requiring no previous tree climbing experience, but requires on-going progress to learn basic skills in climbing, use of ropes and knots, rigging, pruning techniques, tree hardware installation, safety, requirements, and operation of power equipment as related to the job, and achievement of all requirements of Tree Groundsman.

Required Skills

  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Fitness level consistent with climbing requirements
  • Class C Driver’s License
  • Understands all company and industry safety policies
  • Ability to follow directions (written and oral)
  • Ability to perform aerial rescue
  • Ability to tie basic climbing hitches such as taut line hitch and Blake hitch
  • Ability to tie basic rigging knots such as bowline, running bowline, clove hitch (middle of and end of rope), half hitch, and sheet bend
  • Ability to perform a pre climb inspection of climbing gear and tree
  • Begins to learn the bucket truck for safety, setup, limitations, and maintenance
  • Becomes proficient in pruning standards for crown cleaning, crown thinning, hazard pruning, structural pruning, ornamental pruning, and crown reduction
  • Introduction to EHAP
  • Becomes proficient in tree hardware installation including cabling, brace rods, and lightning protection
  • Ability to ascend a tree of 40 feet and work with minimal difficulty and avoid target hazards
  • Becomes proficient in tree identification skills
  • Becomes proficient with Crane Signals
  • Good communication skills

  • Must be able to obtain CDL within 6 months of position

Tree Climber 2 — Intermediate

Job Description

This is an intermediate climber position requiring the performance of mid-level climbing operations for tree removal and trimming, including achievement of all requirements of the Tree Climber Apprentice position.

Required Skills

  • Ability to perform duties of Tree Climber Apprentice
  • Obtains EHAP (Required to move on to tree climber advanced)
  • Has a good working knowledge of pruning including crown reduction and crown restoration pruning
  • Ability to move through a tree with little difficulty
  • Ability to safely ascend a tree of any size
  • Ability to safely perform rigging for larger limb removals
  • Has a good working knowledge of tree identification
  • Has a basic knowledge of tree removal and pruning operations
  • Familiar with all Z-133 & A-300 Parts 1–8 Standards
  • Obtains a CDL (required to move on to tree climber advanced)
  • Basic experience with crane removals
  • Ability to use proper choke techniques
  • Ability to use bypass cut
  • Good communication skills

Additional Skills

  • Ability to obtain ISA Certified Tree Worker (required to move on to Tree Climber Advanced)
  • Speaks and understands English
  • Must be able to obtain CDL within 6 months of position
  • Ability to work towards Certified Arborist credential

Tree Climber 3 — Advanced

Job Description

This is an advanced climber position that requires performance of all climbing operations for tree removal and trimming, assistance of the foreman on the jobsite, and achievement all the requirements of Tree Climber Intermediate.

Required Skills

  • Able to perform duties of Tree Climber Intermediate
  • Able to remove large/hazardous trees
  • Proficient at crane removals
  • Has a strong knowledge and proficiency in all tree care operations:
    • Climbing Operations
    • Bucket Operations
  • Have a strong knowledge of rigging:
    • Forces behind rigging
    • Rates of tensile strength of ropes, slings and blocks
    • Cycles to failure
    • Use the proper rigging for the job
  • Must be able to perform all duties that are asked of production personnel
  • Able to display leadership:
    • Leadership
    • Set an example
    • Give Direction
    • Provide Training
  • Ability to interact with clients and crew members in a professional manner
  • Familiar with standard reporting procedures for accidents/incidents

  • Bi-lingual
  • Must be able to obtain CDL within 6 months of position
  • Ability to work towards Certified Arborist credential
